Acid rain is harmful to the environment because of its low pH.It can harm the biotic components of earth, and also the abiotic components.Its high acidity degrades soil to the aspire where it cannot support any type ofplant life. Trees in forests are killed over long-term exposure. When thesetrees are killed, an imbalance in the hydrologic cycle can occur. Withoutliving trees to see the precipitate, it must be consumed by the earth or anyother plants. These will receive an excess of water, causing other problems inthe hydrologic cycle. Some regions are more susceptible to acid rain because they dont haveenough Alkaline soil to " avoid" the acid before it is able to destroy therest of the soil or before it can run off into lakes or rivers. Acid rain aquatic animals as well as aquatic plant life. Whenacid rain combines with water in major bodies of water, it not only destroyswildlife habitat, it destroys our beverage water. An aquatic ecosystem is verydependent on each and every aspect within itself. Once one species dies off,others that depend on it, will eventually come out to die off also.

Evidence suggests that depression is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality and adversely affects the quality of life and social functioning (Katona, 1994). Newly admitted residents in long-term care facilities are particularly vulnerable to depression and the early recognition and treatment of depression is therefore all-important(a) around the time of admission to a home. (Bagley et al., 2000). By day 14 of their nursing home stay, thirty-eight percents of the admitted residents sampled in a study conducted by Boyle et al. (2004) were imperious for depressive symptoms. Depression then is still a highly significant problem among those admitted to a nursing home. (Boyle, 2004).In contrast, the authors stated that depression recognition in the nursing homes has improved. Michigans Quality Improvement Organization (MPRO) conducted a study of 14 nursing facilities to improve the accuracy of assessments, targeting, and monitoring of care. 69% of participants were female 46% were 76-85 and 37% were 86 or older. Among men, 24% were age 75 or younger 51% were 76-85 and 25% were 86 or older. Compare the ways in which the authors present the main characters “Growing Up” and “Flight” as learning something new

The two stories are very similar in many ways. Both are about learning new things and the changing attitudes between the sexagenarian and the young. Also the main learners in twain stories are the older generation. In pip it is the Grand convey while in Flight it is Robert Quick. Also in both stories the secondary learners are the younger generation Jenny in Growing Up and the mother of the younger generations seem to generate already learned and accredited the lessons. However there is a slight difference I feel that in Flight it is more about accepting new concepts than about learning.In flight the first thing Quick realizes is that his daughters dedicate grown up, he realizes this due to their lack of response to him and their lack of affection. This is how in lines 4 to 6 He had hoped indeed that they might, as often before, been waiting at the corner of the road and in line 25 to 26 He shouted Hullo, hullo, children. There was no reply. And he stopped, in surprise. He expe cts the children to be the same(p) as they were when they were younger but they have changed. This is also shown from lines 34 to 49 where the children are very insensitive towards their father, Jenny answers by having peered at him through her hair and a slight wiggle of her behind and Kate answers him only by faint, muffled Hullo.The Grandfather in Flight learns that his granddaughter has grown up as well in lines 116 and in lines 119 to 122 what makes him realize this is their grown up seriousness. The precedent shows this by contrasting the grand father being shut-out by their grown up seriousness while they are tumbling like puppies on the grass. This contrast shows that although they appear to be the same the grandfather has learnt that inside his granddaughter has changed. Mr. Quick also learns that his daughters can be hurtful and learns non to have fixed expectations of them. He learns of their hurtful ness in lines 75 to 105 when the girls first torture snort and then b egin to attack him. But he then learns not to have fixed expectations of them when shortly subsequently that in lines 125 to 136 they then begin to take care of him and nurse his wounds. A similar thing happens in Flight when the granddaughter first taunts her grandfather in lines 47 to 51, but then later 103 to 105 bring him a present as a peace offering showing him not to have fixed expectations either.Both the granddaughter in Flight and Jenny in Growing Up also learn something new by the death of the stories. The granddaughter realizes that her grandfather does not wish to spite her (as it seems in lines25 to 39) and is only trying to prevent her from getting married because he truly loves her, and he does not wish her to be unhappy. The author has presented this at the very end of the play, so that it has a lingering effect on the reader. Doris Lessing shows this not by any words but by an action, videlicet when the grandfather releases the birds (which have been made to sym bolize the granddaughter) free in lines126 to 145, symbolizing setting his granddaughter free to do as she pleases.In turn she realizes this and reacts to it and is said to be having tears run shivering off her face showing the profound impact it has on her. Joyce Cary author of growing up also shows Jennys new savvy at the end of the story. He leaves the reader with a sense of uncertainty concerning Jenny, unsure as to what exactly she is thinking, leaving it at she also was struck by something new and unexpected. I believe that Jenny gained a new understanding of Quick, perhaps one of vulnerability. This is perhaps due to the fact that quick towards the end is shown as fearing his children. In lines 174 to 175 he is shown as unsure what to think of what Jenny was doing, which may be the base of her new understandingAnother law of similarity between the stories upon comparison is the resemblance in the roles of the Daughter in Flight and Mrs. Quick in Growing Up. The authors of bo th stories show them as being high-performance and show them as already understanding what the other characters are yet to learn. In Growing Up when Mr. Quick tells Mrs. Quick about the events of the day which have shocked him she merely replies All you children- amusing her selves while we run the world. As if the events were perfectly normal and natural, because she already knows to expect it. The same is true for the Daughter in Flight she too shows that she understands both sides and knows what to expect when she converses with her father in lines 75 to 100 when she appears to have al the answers to the grandfathers questions.Both stories have a lot in common in the way the authors present the way in which the characters learn new things. This is especially true in terms of structure where the layout is close to identical. though both stories seem to be about different themes they are very similar in comparison.

Kingship Comparison of Henry V and Beowulf Essay

This essay is a comparison of the queenship of King Henry V in the foregather Henry V written by William Shakespeargon and Beowulf in the poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney. This is what Canterbury observes and states The breath no origin entirelyy left his fathers body precisely that his wildness, mortified in him, Seemd to die too yea, at that very moment, Consideration, like an angel, came, And whippd the offending Adam out of him, Leaving his body as a paradise, To envelop and contain celestial spirits.Never was such a sudden disciple made Never came reformation like a flood, With such a heady current, scouring faults Nor never Hydra-headed wilfulness So soon did lose his seat, and all at once, As in this king (Shakespeare, 13). This change in him is probably because of his desire to be respected as a ruler of his people. Indeed, he has matured over the time that he is required to st and up as a king. Second, he considers that his kingship depends on the go away of the people. Hence, he consults his leaders before he makes a decision.He specifically asks information from the leaders of the church service, the Bishops, about the Salic law and his rightful claim to France and if there should be a reason for him to go to fight if the king of France wont accede to his claim. That is why when he was insulted by the message of the Dauphin, he did not react irrationally.He showed cool-headedness with these words We are glad the Dauphin is so pleasant with us His present and your pains we thank you for. When we have matched our rackets to these balls, we will in France, by immortals grace, play a set to strike his fathers cr experience into the hazard. Then, for th, dear countrymen.Let us deliver Our puissance into the hand of God, Putting it straight in expedition (65) and We are in Gods hand, brother, not in theirs. March to the bridge (119). Fifth, he has concern for his subordinates and his soldiers. Seventh, he understands that a king should practice impartiality.Thus, he gives punishment to anyone who violates a law of the land or his word even if the person is an old friend, and he gives rewards to anyone who deserves it. King Henry V manifests this characteristic when Lord Scroop who was very close to him, Earl of Cambridge and Sir Thomas Grey who are also old friends conspired with France to kill him. He then ordered that they be arrested for imposture (59). Another instance was when he allowed the execution of Bardolph, a former companion in his younger days, for stealing a communion plate from a church (115).Eight, as a good leader he believes that a king needs to delegate work to his subordinates. This is what he did when he tells his uncle Exeter, brothers Clarence, Warwick and Gloster, and Huntington to go with the King And take with you free power to ratify, Augment, or alter, as your wisdoms best Shall see advantageable for our dignity, Anything in or out of our demands (219). And most of all, he believes on a greater power who is the Almighty God whom he considers as his source of power. He continually refers to God in the play.King Henry says But this lies all within the will of God, To whom I do appeal (37) when he decided to go to war against France. He expresses his anxiety by saying Gods will, I pray thee wish not one man more. By Jove, I am not covetous for gold (163) while his soldiers are fighting in the war. At the end of the battle, he speaks to God with these words O God, thy arm was here, And not to us, but to Thy arm alone Ascribe we all When, without stratagem, But in filmy shock and even play of battle, Was ever known so great and little loss On one part and on th other?Take it, God, For it is none but thine (199). King Henry V does not take the glory of the victory in the batt le but he praises God for it. Similarly, Beowulf even before he was made a King of the Geats has the qualities of a good and great king as Henry the Fifth is and he is also worth imitating as a leader. The following are the ideas of kingship he manifested. First, Beowulf is compassionate as a leader. When he heard of Heorots predicament because of Grendels deeds, he went to Heorot to fight Grendel and freed Heorot of its miseries (lines 400-460).He has compassion towards people that is why he sacrifices even his own life to save others. Second, he uses his strength which is the gift that God has assumption him as a way to help people who are in need. This is the means by which he was able to defeat Grendel, Grendels mother and the calculus in order to free the people who are attacked by these creatures. There are times when he is about to be defeated but because of the great strength which he believes comes from God, he is able to overcome his deadly and monstrous foes.Third, he i s a brave and courageous warrior who never steps back from a challenge especially when he fights Grendel and Grendels mother. His bravery and courage can be seen throughout the poem. This was once again proven when as a king who is already old in age still hopes to fight the Dragon that has besieged his own land. Unfortunately, after he killed the Dragon, he also died. Fourth, he knows that a king should rule with discretion. He is even praised by Hrothgar with these words The Lord in his wisdom sent you those words that Beowulf is fit to be king of the Geats and they came (lines 1840-1860).Fifth, as a leader, he has great concern and responsibility for his men. Thus, when he was about to go and fight Grendel, he asks Hrothgar to take care of his men because he might no longer come back alive with his fight against the monster. And the most important of Beowulfs qualities as a warrior and ruler is that he looks up to God as his source of power, guidance and protection. Throughout th e poem, God is praised with such words as in triumph and gladness. The truth is clear Almighty God rules over mankind and always has (line 700).Beowulf also expresses in the poem But the lord of Men allowed me to behold- for He often helps the unbefriended and If God had not helped me, the outcome would have been straightaway and fatal referring to his fight with Grendels mother. In addition, he says So I praise God in his heavenly glory that I lived to behold (line 1779). In conclusion, Henry the Fifth and Beowulf exhibit the good qualities of a great king anchored on strength, courage and faith in Gods providence.Both of them are wise, strong, brave, and devoted to God as their one and only source of power. At the beginning of the story, the older brother is on his way to work as a schoolteacher.As he travels d avow the road, he also reads the newspaper publisher and found out that his brother was caught dealing with heroine. Even before, Sonny was suspected by his older brother of using vicious drugs but the older brother does nothing. Before the drug related incident happens, the older brother who is also the narrator of the story always talks somewhat Sonny as existence a good brother. He says When Sonny was young, his face was bright and open. Sonnys brother worries about the involvement of Sonny in illegal drugs.Sonny is being dependent on drugs and uses it as a way to escape his problems. This problem makes his brother think of the things he did wrong to make Sonny affect in drug addiction. As a result of that, the brother misinterprets all the acts Sonny is doing. He does not listen to Sonny even if it has to be about the explanation and reasons of why Sonny engaged to drug related activities. Sonny finds himself neglected by his brother. This makes him think that no one could help him but his own self. Realizing this, he diverts his attention to music.This involvement to music makes him finds the relief he is searching for. With the music playing, Sonny is able to escape the problems he is encountering. The improvement of Sonny is but noticed by his brother. At first, his involvement to music disappoints his brother not until his brother realizes the changes music has done to Sonny. His brother accepts the truth and realizes that music has done a good job to Sonnys development. It all happened in the part of the story where his brother is listening to Sonny as he plays the piano.As Sonny plays the piano, his brother feels that Sonny need his guidance and love. The unconditional love by the brother to Sonny was depicted in the story. Listening to the Jazz music played by Sonny, the attitude of the brother towards life, himself and Sonny changes. The estrangement of the two brothers hurt them both. Sonnys dedication to music and his determination to stay away from any crop of illegal drugs move the older brother to change. The love and passion of both brothers are shown in the story.Their fight against the darkness in Harlem made them realize that to win is to accept the weakness of each one of them and to be able to survive is to help each other. As a final point, to be able to survive in a society where you are not the main character, you must learn to adapt and to help o thers that are also adapting. The challenges of Black American brothers in the time of racism and its fight against illegal drugs can be solve if trust, acceptance and love is within the family ties.
